Dutch Flat Bottom Boats to Make Appearance in North Hempstead Waters
North Hempstead, NY—Supervisor Jon Kaiman and Town Councilman Fred L. Pollack informed residents today that a fleet of distinctive Dutch flat bottom boats will sail into the New York area in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Hudson River.
The unique low-slung fishing boats and barges will make appearances in waters around North Hempstead on Sept. 4 at the Town Dock in Manhasset Bay and on Sept. 9 in Hempstead Harbor.
Among the Dutch flat bottom boats on display is the Vrouwe Cornelia. Built in 1888, it is one of the larger boats in the flotilla, measuring 70 feet in length and 14 on the beam.
Dates may change depending on weather conditions in the area.
Supervisor Kaiman and Councilman Pollack urge residents not to miss the opportunity to visit these unique boats. Contact NY2009@spts.nl for more information on the flat bottom boat activities.
