Supervisor Bosworth Provides Residents with Hurricane Safety Tips
North Hempstead, NY – With hurricane season underway, Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town of North Hempstead Office of Emergency Management would like to remind residents that it is important to prepare ahead of time and be aware of safety precautions that can help protect your family.
“Being proactive in preparing for a hurricane is imperative to staying safe”, said Supervisor Bosworth. “We want to provide our residents with all the necessary tools and knowledge needed to protect themselves and their families in the event of a natural disaster or any emergency event.”
Using these tips, residents can prepare in case of a hurricane emergency:
- Families should have an emergency kit containing: water, batteries, non-perishable food, flashlights, a first aid kit and can opener. There should be enough supplies to last five days for each family member.
- Be aware of the emergency evacuation routes in your community.
- Create a family emergency plan with a meeting spot, contact numbers, and exits from your home.
- Plan in advance for pets. Create an animal emergency supply kit with food, water, and other supplies; and research hotels and motels that accept pets.
It is recommended that during a hurricane, you always stay indoors and away from windows and glass doors. Following the conclusion of a hurricane, it is important to be on alert for flooding and to avoid fallen trees and branches as well as loose and dangling power lines.
Additional safety tips for senior residents include:
- Create a network of neighbors, relatives and friends who can assist you during an emergency.
- Keep specialized items such as extra wheelchair batteries, oxygen and medication on hand.
- Have a copy of medical information including a listing medications and health records and make provisions for any medications that require refrigeration.
