Town Co-Hosts “Empowering Seniors to Prevent Financial Elder Abuse” Seminar

North Hempstead, NY – Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman recently announced that Project Independence, the Town’s groundbreaking “aging in place” initiative, will be co-hosting a seminar designed to help seniors avoid financial abuse.

The FREE event will take place on Friday, June 14th, from 8:30am to 1:30pm at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock, located at 48 Shelter Rock Road in Manhasset. Town residents 60 and older and their caregivers, family members, and neighbors are encouraged to attend.

The program focuses on the problems associated with the financial abuse of elders. It also seeks to empower the attendees with the tools to confront these challenges by bringing together senior citizens, their families, caregivers, national and local government officials, and the private sector to present ideas on how to help seniors avoid financial elder–abuse.

“The sad truth is, seniors often become victims of financial abuse,” said Supervisor Jon Kaiman. “Financial exploitation wears many disguises and the abusers can be anyone – even someone you know very well. I hope that all of our older residents consider attending this program to better understand when this form of abuse is occurring, and how to stop it.”

Nassau County Legislator Judi Bosworth, who will be speaking at the event said, “This event is significant because it brings together leaders from all levels of government, as well as professionals in the field, to educate our seniors on how to protect themselves from financial elder abuse. I am honored to be a part of this important forum that will help to raise consciousness about this critical issue.”

An impressive lineup of government leaders and organizations will be on hand to provide presentations and informational kiosks. They include: Jon Kaiman, Supervisor, Town of North Hempstead; Charles Berman, Receiver of Taxes, Town of North Hempstead; Jack Martins, NYS Senator, 7th SD; Michelle Schimel, NYS Assembly Member, 16th AD; Kathleen Rice, Nassau County District Attorney; Judi Bosworth, Nassau County Legislator, 10th LD; United Nations, Global Action on Aging; U.S. Department of Health & Human Services; Office of the New York State Attorney General; Office of the New York State Comptroller; Nassau County District Attorney’s Office; Brookdale Center for Health Aging and Longevity at Hunter College; North Shore-LIJ Health System; and the Parker Jewish Institute.
