North Hempstead’s Project Independence Reaches Landmark 100,000th Request

North Hempstead, NY – Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board announced that North Hempstead’s Project Independence recently reached a notable milestone with its 100,000th Project Independence service request. Project Independence is the Town’s groundbreaking “aging-in-place” initiative, which provides services for residents aged 60 and over and is designed to allow senior residents to stay in their own homes and communities as they grow older.

Calls for Project Independence-related services come in through the Town’s 311 Call Center and include requests for discounted taxi service to medical appointments and free food shopping rides, which accounts for more than 70% of the calls. Other popular reasons to contact Project Independence are to be connected to health and mental health services, to receive caregiver support, and to be directed toward financial assistance experts.

“This is a landmark for Project Independence and it’s wonderful to know that our senior residents find the services useful and continue to come back and use the program,” said Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “This milestone speaks volumes about the popularity of Project Independence and the fact that our seniors continue to reach out to our caring and talented Town employees.”

By dialing 311, residents are put in touch with a Project Independence staff member who can help them answer their questions, locate information, and access valuable resources such as health screenings, immunizations, and reduced cost transportation. Many of Project Independence’s staff members are nurses, social workers, and community advocates who are able to connect seniors to various agencies, businesses and institutions within the Town.

Part of North Hempstead’s Department of Services for the Aging, Project Independence also has satellite locations in Great Neck, Manhasset, New Hyde Park, Port Washington, Roslyn and Westbury.
