North Hempstead Day

Immediate Release - Contact: David Chauvin (516) 869-7794 -August 29, 2005

Manhasset, NYSupervisor Jon Kaiman, Town Clerk Michelle Schimel and Councilman Angelo Ferrara are inviting everyone to come and celebrate the past with the first annual North Hempstead Day on Friday September 23, 2005. This year’s festivities will include a series of educational and fun activities, music, and games for the entire family.

“North Hempstead has an extraordinary past and our history is truly revolutionary,” said Supervisor Kaiman. “I hope everyone will take this unique opportunity to learn about some of the remarkable events that have happened right here in the Town.”

On September 23, 1775, a group of patriots living in the northern section of the Town gathered in Cow Neck – modern day Port Washington – and declared their allegiance to the revolutionary cause by formally seceding from the Town of Hempstead which was heavily populated by Loyalists to England.

“This is one of the most exciting and fun things I’ve participated in as Town Clerk,” said Ms. Schimel. “We are bringing our wonderful records to life.”

“This is a great way to establish an annual tradition of celebrating the Town’s history,” added Councilman Ferrara.

To honor this historic day, The Town has planned a series of events:

  • Friday September 23rd
