North Hempstead Encourages Residents to Recycle Live Christmas Trees and Unwanted Electronics This Holiday Season

North Hempstead, NY –Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board are encouraging residents to recycle their live Christmas Trees, unwanted electronics and old holiday lights this season, in keeping with the Town’s commitment to reduce, reuse and recycle.

To dispose of Christmas trees, residents can leave them curbside on normal yard waste pick-up days for the first two weeks of January.

“’Tree-Cycling is just another way that we can benefit our environment in the Town of North Hempstead,” Supervisor Bosworth said. “Old trees can be turned into mulch for garden or landscaping which ultimately saves other trees from being cut down.”

Additionally, Supervisor Bosworth encourages residents to recycle their holiday lights and unwanted electronics. Arguably, electronics rank among the most popular gift atop many people’s holiday wish list, adults and children alike, making old and unwanted electronic items more prevalent at this time of year. Collected electronic waste is hauled off by the town’s EPA certified e-waste recycler, who disassembles the items, salvages the useable parts, separates out potentially damaging materials, and recycles the balance.

Residents can dump energy-gulping holiday lights until the end of January, and other unwanted electronics on Sundays from 7:30am to 3:30pm at North Hempstead’s residential drop-off site, located at 999 West Shore Road in Roslyn. E-waste can also be disposed of during the weekdays at North Hempstead’s Solid Waste Management Authority (SWMA), located at 802 West Shore Road in Port Washington, Monday through Friday, from 8:00am to 4:00pm, excluding holidays.
