North Hempstead, NY – For the fifth straight year, Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the North Hempstead Town Board joined with representatives of local government last week to host the Town’s “Thank You to Our Veterans” Breakfast. Nearly 300 guests attended the two-hour, Clinton G. Martin Park breakfast gathering that took place on October 8th.

In addition to paying tribute to the men and women who courageously put themselves in harm’s way to protect America’s freedoms, the breakfast conference brought together various veteran agencies to raise awareness and answer questions about available services and entitlements.

Joining Supervisor Bosworth were members of the North Hempstead Town Board: Councilman Peter Zuckerman, Councilman Angelo Ferrara, Councilwoman Anna Kaplan, Councilwoman Lee Seeman, and Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio. Also in attendance were Town Clerk Wayne Wink Jr., Receiver of Taxes Charles Berman, Nassau County Legislator Ellen Birnbaum, Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton, and State Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel.

Supervisor Bosworth addressed the crowd and expressed gratitude to all those veterans on hand and said, “The Town of North Hempstead has a proud tradition of military service, and this is just one small way to show our appreciation for those in our Town who fought so selflessly to protect our freedom.”

The Town launched a Veterans Advisory Committee last year which has served to not just honor Town veterans but also provide them with the services and benefits they so well deserve. The committee meets bi-monthly and consists of veterans who represent their respective communities across our Town, civic leaders who have been advocates for the veteran community and citizens with an expertise in veterans’ affairs. Thus far the committee has sponsored a veterans donation drive in partnership with the Northport Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, and worked with the VA to bring in a mobile van unit to provide veterans with their VA health cards. A town-wide newsletter was also sent out this summer with important information and phone numbers.

“The goal of our Veterans Advisory Committee has been to connect our veterans with meaningful services, benefits and information and I am proud that we have been able to accomplish that thus far,” Supervisor Bosworth said. “I look forward to continuing to meet with our committee to address veterans’ needs.”

The “Salute to Veterans” program, which was coordinated by the Town’s Department of Community Services and sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union, kicked off with a presentation of the colors by a six-man detail from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. That was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance by Receiver of Taxes Berman, the Star-Spangled Banner, a moment of silence in memory of all those who have given their lives in defense of our nation, the Armed Forces Medley, performed by the U.S. Army Field Band and Soldiers Chorus, and an Invocation by Dr. Robert Widom, Senior Rabbi, Temple Emanuel of Great Neck.

After Supervisor Bosworth introduced the elected officials and thanked everyone for coming, she turned it over to the keynote speaker, Philip S. Moschitta, Director of the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Other speakers included Brent Russell, Program Coordinator for the PFC Dwyer Peer Support Project / VET2VET, and Rhea Spina, Project Coordinator at the Veterans Health Alliance of Long Island.
