North Hempstead Announces Expansion of My Brother’s Keeper Mentorship Program into Westbury

North Hempstead, NY – North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth announced this week that the My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) North Hempstead mentoring program has now expanded into Westbury following its debut in Manhasset this past December.

Each week, eight 9th graders from Westbury High School will be spending time with mentors at North Hempstead’s “Yes We Can” Community Center to discuss their future plans beyond high school and participate in engaging career and college oriented activities.  This is in addition to four students from Manhasset High School who weekly meet with mentors at North Hempstead Town Hall.  The summertime component of the program is an internship opportunity for the mentees within the Town of North Hempstead.

“It is exciting to continue to expand the ‘My Brother’s Keeper’ program into another North Hempstead community,” Supervisor Bosworth said.  “I have had the opportunity to meet with our mentors and mentees in Manhasset and the program has been a rousing success thus far.  I look forward to seeing more of the same enthusiasm on the part of both our mentors and mentees in Westbury.”

On September 27, 2014, President Barack Obama named over 100 municipalities across the nation as “early acceptors” of the White House MBK Challenge, including the Town of North Hempstead. MBK focuses on efforts to eliminate opportunity gaps, barriers, and challenges facing youth in our community and to ensure that all young people can reach their full potential.

According to the MBK Challenge, Towns must accept two or three goals set by the Administration. In North Hempstead, the goals are to ensure that all youth graduate from high school; all youth complete post-secondary education or training; and all youth out of school are employed.
