TOWN BOARD ROUND UP

Board Approves Law Strengthening Indoor Smoking Restrictions & Regulates Concrete Recycling

North Hempstead, NY – Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board unanimously approved the adoption of a local zoning law which regulates indoor smoking establishments during the August 9 Town Board meeting. The law would require new indoor smoking establishments to apply for a permit from the Board of Zoning appeals. Existing stores currently in North Hempstead, with legal permits, would be grandfathered in. The law was proposed by Council Member Dina De Giorgio.

In addition to this, the law would restrict indoor smoking establishments within a 500 foot radius of areas zoned for residential use. It also prohibits an establishment within 1,000 feet of a school, church or other place of religious worship, park, playground or playing field, library, hospital or similar public or semi-public place of general congregation, or non-degree-granting instruction/programs, including tutoring centers, self-defense, dance, swimming, gymnastics and other sports.

During the meeting the Board also voted on a law which would require concrete recycling operations to enclose their crushing operations, enforce dust control measures and reduce the noise associated with crushing. The law which was proposed by Council Member Viviana Russell was unanimously approved 7-0 and adopted.

The next meeting of the Town Board will be held on August 23 at 7:30 p.m.

Serving over 222,000 people, the Town of North Hempstead’s governing body is headed by the Town Supervisor, Judi Bosworth and six Town Board members: Viviana L. Russell, Peter J. Zuckerman, Angelo P. Ferrara, Anna M. Kaplan, Lee R. Seeman and Dina M. De Giorgio. The Town Clerk is Wayne Wink and the Receiver of Taxes is Charles Berman.
