Housing Lottery Held for Hopeful Homeowners

North Hempstead, the Community Development Agency & the Long Island Housing Partnership hold lottery drawing for four affordable homes in New Cassel

North Hempstead, NY – Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Council Members Viviana Russell and Anna Kaplan, Nassau County Legislator Siela Bynoe and the Town of North Hempstead Community Development Agency, in cooperation with the Long Island Housing Partnership, Inc. recently held a housing lottery where 288 hopeful homeowners learned the order of their eligibility ranking for an opportunity to purchase one of four homes. All those entered in the lottery had met certain income requirements prior to the drawing.

“The housing lottery provides an opportunity for people, who otherwise might not have had the ability to do so, to own homes,” said Supervisor Bosworth. “Home ownership transforms a person, giving him or her dignity and a safe place to raise a family. It is only through the cooperative efforts of the Town, the CDA, the Long Island Housing Partnership, Inc., Nassau County and the State that we are able to produce such positive results that benefit our entire community.”
Council Member Viviana Russell, who represents the Westbury area, said "Creating affordable housing for those who otherwise may have little to no options has always been on the top of my priority list. Continually being able to see this goal come to fruition has been one of the greatest joys during my term as Councilwoman. I wish the best to all those who qualified for the initial ranking lottery, and I look forward to seeing and welcoming all the new home owner’s to District one.”
Council Member Anna Kaplan said “The North Hempstead Workforce Housing Lottery provides affordable housing opportunities for hopeful homeowners, while also reviving neighborhoods. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

The lottery winners will have an opportunity to purchase one of three affordable, newly-constructed homes in New Cassel, as well as one completely renovated single-family home. The newly-constructed homes are located on Urban Avenue and Shomer Place in New Cassel and offer three bedrooms, 1 ½ bathrooms and a garage. This program is being coordinated with the assistance of County of Nassau and its Office of Community Development, New York State Affordable Housing Corporation and Anray Custom Builders Inc. of Sea Cliff New York.

Housing lotteries are held periodically. Interested individuals must first apply and, if eligible, are then entered into a homeownership lottery. Entrance into this program is limited to households that earn at or below 80% of the Nassau/Suffolk area median income based on household size. A household must be able to qualify for a mortgage and attend a pre-purchase mortgage counseling session. There are no requirements as to where you currently live or work. For more information about future housing lottery opportunities, contact the Long Island Housing Partnership, Inc. at (631) 435-4710 or call the Town of North Hempstead’s 311 Call Center.
