Councilman Ferrara holds successful community meeting
Many residents happy with proposed parking regulation changes
North Hempstead Councilman Angelo P. Ferrara held a community meeting on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 in Clinton G. Martin Park for the purpose of discussing proposed changes to the parking regulations near the Merillon Avenue train station in Garden City Park. Also on hand was Diane O’Donnell, Traffic Technician for the Town of North Hempstead.
Councilman Ferrara and Mrs. O’Donnell first explained some of the changes from what is currently posted, and then gave the attendees an opportunity to speak. Approximately 100 residents were in attendance and many chose to voice their opinion.
After the meeting concluded, Councilman Ferrara remarked, “This has been a long process and I thank the residents for their patience. This is not a ‘one size fits all’ situation. We have looked at everything block-by-block and achieved what appears to be consensus among residents.”
He also reminded residents that the proposal was not finalized and would be tweaked. “I would say that about 90% of the residents were satisfied. We are going to take another look in the areas where there was still some uncertainty.”
Over the past year, a parking moratorium has been in place while a study of the parking regulations was in progress. Surveys were mailed to residents in the area. That was followed up with walking door-to-door to those who did not respond to the survey.
The streets that will be affected by these potential changes are Atlantic Avenue (between Nassau Boulevard and 5 th Street), Fulton Avenue (between Nassau Boulevard and 5 th Street), Broadway (between Nassau Boulevard and 5 th Street), Park Avenue (between Nassau Boulevard and 5 th Street), Bedford Avenue (between Hilton Avenue and Nassau Boulevard), as well as the entire stretch of Corbin Avenue, Hilton Avenue, and Norton Avenue.
