Lead Waterline Replacement Grant

DEAR RESIDENT

If your home was built before 1939, it might have a lead water service line. Lead water service lines can leach lead and elevate lead levels in your family’s drinking water. Elevated lead levels may cause severe health problems, especially for pregnant women, persons with disabilities, and young children.  If your house water service line is lead, replace it now with a Lead Service Line Replacement Program (LSLRP) grant funded by the New York State Department of Health.

ELIGIBILITY
If your home is in the Town of North Hempstead and the water service line or part of it is lead, you are likely eligible. Households with pregnant women, persons with disabilities, and young children are prioritized.

DETERMINE IF WATER SERVICE LINE IS LEAD
Learn how to determine if your water service line is lead with National Resources Defense Council’s (NRDC) YouTube BELOW and check your house water service line for lead. Scrape your house water service line where it comes through the wall into your house as close to the wall as possible:1. If it’s soft and turns shiny like a new nickel, it is likely lead. 2. If it turns shiny like a new penny, ask your water district to confirm if any other part of your water service line is lead. 3. If the water district does not know if any part of your service line is lead, obtain a free lead test kit from NYSDOH at 518-402-7650 or https://on.ny.gov/3thLXcE and test your water for lead.

PLEASE NOTE -  THIS PROGRAM HAS ENDED
