Town Now Accepting Submissions for Second Annual “Trashion Show

North Hempstead, NY
– The Town of North Hempstead’s commitment to greening the environment is reflected in a good number of programs. Among them are the Comprehensive School Recycling Partnership Program, the pharmaceutical take back program and recent Smart Tap filtered water fountain installations.

One of the newest and most eye-catching programs in the Town’s collection of environmental initiatives, the “Trashion Show,” will take center stage for an encore at the “Yes We Can” Community Center in Westbury on January 16 at 7:00pm. The Town is now accepting submissions from young creative students to be part of this year’s event!

Designed to heighten awareness among the youth about becoming stewards of the environment, the Trashion show invites students in the nine school districts participating in the School Recycling program to showcase apparel and accessories they design and create completely from recyclable material or any material that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill.

“The Trashion Show provides students with the ability to express their creativity while teaching them the importance of protecting our environment,” said Interim Supervisor John Riordan. “Education about sustainability at a young age will encourage them to become protectors of the environment and pass along the habit to the generation after them.”

This year’s Trashion Show” will be sponsored by Hirshleifers of Americana Manhasset, a destination for over a century for the purchase of exclusive European and American couture clothing and accessories.

Pieces from the show will be displayed at the gallery at the “Yes We Can” Community Center and at the New York State Capitol in Albany during March.

Work being submitted to the show must be completed and delivered to 802 West Shore Road, Port Washington by January 10, 2014.
