Town Welcomes Roslyn and Mineola School Districts to the School Recycling Partnership Program
All 11 Town school districts now participate in groundbreaking program

North Hempstead, NY – Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Councilman Peter Zuckerman, and Councilman Angelo Ferrara were pleased this week to welcome the Roslyn and Mineola School Districts to the Town’s award-winning comprehensive School Recycling Partnership Program, a groundbreaking initiative that now has all 11 Town of North Hempstead school districts participating.

As part of the Program, the Town supplies every single classroom and office in each participating district with recycling bins. The Town also commits to carting all the recyclables collected in nearly 50 school buildings throughout the Town. With more than 40,000 students participating, the recycling program reaps an average of 25 tons of paper and 6 tons of co-mingled recyclables a month.

“We are excited to welcome the Roslyn School District to be part of our School Recycling Program,” said Supervisor Bosworth. “We hope that the students in Roslyn will be enthusiastic participants and lifelong advocates for greening our environment. Their participation in the program will help prevent large amounts of solid waste from entering the landfills.”

“The amount of recyclables that are collected by our Town’s schools is staggering,” said Councilman Zuckerman. “But in addition to reducing waste, the students become the stewards of the community and our precious environment, as they pass on the practice of recycling to their peers and members of their household.”

"I am so proud of our Schools, Administrators, teachers and students for embracing this significantly important program and making it a way of life in North Hempstead," Councilman Angelo Ferrara said.

Since the School Recycling Partnership Program was instituted the North Hempstead 6 years ago, the results have been:

  • An estimated 1,536 tons of paper recycled
  • An estimated 168 tons of comingled (plastic, aluminum, glass) recyclables recycled
  • An estimated 150 tons of electronic waste recycled
