North Hempstead’s Performance Management System ‘TownStat’ Recognized for 6th Consecutive Year

North Hempstead, NY – North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth announced today that TownStat, the Town’s performance measurement and management system, has been honored by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) for the sixth consecutive year with the Certificate of Distinction Award. The award recognizes the efforts made by the TownStat staff to track, report, and act upon performance data and to help promote cost reduction and quality improvement in the Town’s everyday operations.

“We are honored to receive this award from the ICMA for a sixth consecutive year, this is a testament to our commitment to effectively collect and measure data,” Supervisor Bosworth said. “By keeping track of the information that we collect from our 311 Call Center, we are able to better ensure constituents’ concerns are addressed in a timely manner.”

According to the ICMA, North Hempstead is among eight jurisdictions nationwide to receive the Certificate of Distinction, and one of 52 recognized overall by the ICMA in any category.

“The certificate program recognizes communities that have demonstrated leadership in continuous improvement and community engagement using performance analysis,” said ICMA Executive Director Robert J. O’Neill, Jr. “Performance analysis is an integral component of professional local government management, and jurisdictions meeting the certificate qualifications serve as examples for other governments to follow.”

The ICMA says performance management aids encourage accountability and transparency in government. Over the past two years, the Town has implemented various measures in order to promote an open and transparent government, including live streaming board meetings, making meeting agendas and backup information available prior to meetings on the Town’s website, and creating an OpenGov website portal.

The ICMA assesses a local government’s performance management program and encourages analysis of results by comparing to peers and gauging performance over time. Performance management aids in cost reduction, program prioritization, and quality improvement. It also encourages accountability and transparency.

The Certificate of Distinction will be presented to the Town at the ICMA’s Annual Conference from September 25-28 in Kansas City/Jackson County, Missouri.
