Supervisor Bosworth, Council Member Russell Invite Residents to Celebrate Black History Month
This year’s theme: ‘Celebrating African American Achievements in Arts, Science and Education” will include a month-long art display
North Hempstead, NY – North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Council Member Viviana Russell, and the Town Board will once again host a celebration in honor of Black History Month on February 10 at 7 p.m. at the “Yes We Can” Community Center in Westbury. The theme of this year’s event is “Celebrating African American Achievements in Arts, Science and Education,” and will include a first-time ever month-long art exhibit.
Two exhibits from the Nassau County African American Museum (“Women in NASA” and “African Genius”) will be on display throughout the month of February, in addition to works by featured artists: Brumsic Brandon, Jr. and Barbara Brandon Croft, the first nationally-syndicated African American cartoonists.
“Black History Month is an opportunity for all of us in North Hempstead to learn about and reflect on some of the extraordinary contributions by African Americans in our country and right here in our Town,’” said Supervisor Bosworth. “Honoring several of our local residents for the wonderful work they do in our community is always inspirational and uplifting.”
Those who attend the celebration during the evening of February 10 will also enjoy live jazz by the “Yes We Can” Community Band. Shortly after the art gallery is unveiled to the public, awards will be issued honoring prominent African American members of the North Hempstead community who have displayed remarkable generosity in their community service.
“This is definitely an event I look forward to every year,” said Council Member Russell, who became the first African-American female Town Board member when she was first elected in 2009. “Not only will the art displayed here be both important and educational, but we’ll also once again reflect on these great contributions by our honorees and illustrate how appreciative we are for all they have done for us.”
The “Yes We Can” Community Center is located at 141 Garden Street in Westbury. For more information please call 311 or visit www.northhempsteadny.gov.
