Supervisor Strongly Urges State’s Dept. of Health to Avoid Clustering Medical Marijuana Facilities in North Hempstead
North Hempstead, NY –North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth has contacted the New York State Department of Health Commissioner to urge the department consider locating any additional Nassau County medical marijuana dispensaries (MMD) outside of North Hempstead, after the Town received a building permit application for a third MMD from MedMen, a company that supplies medical marijuana products. North Hempstead is currently the only municipality in Nassau County that has any MMD’s-one in North New Hyde Park; one in Carle Place under renovation and a third, recently proposed for a location in Manhasset.
“While I support the use of medical marijuana for those who are suffering from serious medical conditions, it is concerning that the Town of North Hempstead is the only municipality in Nassau County with any active or proposed facilities,” the Supervisor stated in her letter. “The newest proposed location in Manhasset would be the third medical marijuana dispensary in our Town. There have been no other dispensary locations proposed in the two other towns and two cities in Nassau County. Not only does the clustering of facilities within North Hempstead impact our residents, it requires other Nassau County residents to travel far distances to the northwest corner of the county. North Hempstead is home to 17% of Nassau County’s approximately 1.3 million residents and, as of today, 100% of the County’s current and proposed medical marijuana dispensaries.”
Medical Marijuana Dispensary locations and operators of medical marijuana facilities are tightly regulated by the State. The Town’s role is limited to determining whether the location is compliant with zoning regulations.
The Supervisor also added that she would “encourage residents to talk to their state representatives who have a say over the Medical Marijuana Dispensary legislation.”
