Town of North Hempstead Awarded “Code Department of the Year”

North Hempstead, NY – The Town of North Hempstead was recently awarded “Code Department of the Year” by the American Association of Code Enforcement (AACE). This was awarded to Town partly based on the Public Safety Department’s work to enforce North Hempstead’s pioneering Tobacco 21 law.

In 2017, North Hempstead was one of the first municipalities in New York, following New York City and Suffolk County, to prohibit the sale of tobacco products, liquid nicotine and electronic cigarettes to anyone under the age of 21. The Town’s Public Safety Department was in charge of enforcing the law with Code Enforcement officers personally visiting stores to make sure the new law was being followed.

Commissioner of Public Safety Shawn Brown accepted the award at the 29th Annual AACE Educational Conference which was held in Broomfield, Colorado. More than 200 municipalities attended the conference and many of which competed for the award.

The American Association of Code Enforcement is a national nonprofit association representing the profession of code enforcement. Since its inception, AACE has become the premier association fostering code compliance through its certification program, education, training and enforcement.
