North Hempstead Extends Property Tax Payment Deadline for Furloughed Federal Employees
North Hempstead, NY – Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the North Hempstead Town Board will be holding a special Town Board meeting on Friday, February 8 at 9:30 a.m. to vote on a 90 day extension for federal workers affected by the shutdown to pay their property taxes.
“We hope that this 90 day extension will help residents in our community who are federal workers and were impacted by the government shutdown,” said Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “This extension will help provide them with some relief.”
The Town will be opting into a law that was passed by the New York State Legislature authorizing municipalities to allow furloughed government employees a 90 day extension on paying their property taxes. The extension would apply to the first-half of the 2019 general taxes, which were originally due on Monday, February 11.
Those applying for the extension will need to fill out an application form and bring a letter from the federal agency at which he or she is employed, stating that they were furloughed or designated “non-pay” as a result of a period of a lapse in discretionary appropriations by the federal government. Documentation must be submitted to the Receiver of Taxes no later than March 13, 2019.
