Town Announces Climate Smart Communities Task Force Members

North Hempstead, NY – North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board recently announced that the Town is continuing its efforts toward achieving certification to become a Bronze Certified Climate Smart Community. Climate Smart Communities is a New York State program which provides guidance to local governments on the best practices for mitigating and adapting to climate change.

As part of the certification process participating communities are asked to take action in two main ways. This includes minimizing the risk of climate change and adapting to a changing climate by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The Town has completed many actions with the goal of becoming a Climate Smart Community. Some of the actions include: the green building certification of the “Yes We Can” Community Center, using alternative fuel vehicles, participating in a solar energy campaign, and implementing energy code training and practices.

The Town approved the nomination of Harriett Becker, Jean Celender, Stephen Cipot, Patrick Farrell, Jael Ferguson, Carol Frank, Paula Groothuis, Patricia Katz, and Rosemary Mascali, as part of the Climate Smart Communities task force during the Town Board meeting on March 18. Task force members will work to help the Town complete additional actions needed to be certified at the bronze level and beyond.
