North Hempstead Offers Cooling Centers and Extended Pool Hours to Combat Heat Wave 

North Hempstead, NY – With a heatwave and high humidity predicted for our area, Supervisor Jennifer DeSena and the North Hempstead Town Board announced the opening of cooling centers across the Town today, Tuesday, July 19 through Sunday, July 24 to help residents stay cool and avoid heat exhaustion. These sites offer residents air conditioning and a place to sit and relax while they escape temperatures in the 90s. The Town has also announced extended hours at two Town pools from July 19 through July 24 due to the current heatwave. Additionally, to allow more time for collections to occur in a safe manner during this week’s heat, collections in the Albertson-Searingtown-Herricks, Great Neck, Manhasset, New Cassel, and New Hyde Park-Garden City Park-Floral Park Centre garbage districts will start at 6am on Wednesday July 20 through Friday, July 22.

The cooling centers will be open Tuesday, July 19 through Friday, July 24. Locations include:
“Yes We Can” Community Center (141 Garden Street, Westbury) - 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Clinton G. Martin Park (New Hyde Park Road & Marcus Avenue, New Hyde Park) - 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The following pools will have extended hours and will be open until 9 p.m. due to the current heatwave from Tuesday, July 19 through Friday, July 24:
Clinton G. Martin Park Pool (New Hyde Park Road & Marcus Avenue, New Hyde Park)
Manorhaven Beach Park Pool (Manorhaven Boulevard, Port Washington)

Additionally, Whitney Pond Pool members will be allowed to swim at Manorhaven Beach Park Pool through Sunday, July 24.

The following tips may help you stay cool and comfortable all summer long:
Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
Wear clothing that is light-colored, lightweight, loose and absorbent. Cotton is a good choice.
Eat fruits and vegetables to replace nutrients.
Wear a wide brimmed hat when going outdoors.
Take cool baths and shower once or twice a day.
Limit caffeine and alcoholic drinks.
Check the daily heat index in the newspaper to alert you to risk of heat related illness.
