North Hempstead Hosts Free Seminar on STAR Program and Property Tax Assessment

 April 22 | 10:30 - Noon | Clinton G. Martin Park

New Hyde Park, NY—For more than a decade now, New York’s homeowners have been able to take advantage of partial property tax reductions—known as the STAR exemption—from the state to offset skyrocketing property taxes.

But the most recent “rebate” portion of the STAR program is facing its demise due to the state’s huge budget shortfall, an outcome that promises to put further financial strain on households, particularly seniors on fixed incomes.

With Project Independence—North Hempstead’s initiative to help seniors age in place—gaining momentum, Supervisor Jon Kaiman announced a presentation aimed at dealing with concerns about the termination of the STAR rebate.

Hosted by the town’s newly formed Department of Services for the Aging, the educational program is scheduled for April 22 from 10:30 to noon at Clinton G. Martin Park in New Hyde Park.

Presenter, Dolores Sedacca, the Community Service Representative and Ombudsman for the Nassau County Department of Assessment, will address questions concerning the following exemptions: details on STAR (basic and enhanced), Senior Citizen, Veterans, Limited Income and Disability, Volunteer Firefighter/EMT and Home Improvement.

The seminar will also tackle questions concerning how tax assessment value is determined, as well as give an overview of the Assessment Department’s property search website.

The no-cost presentation will also include free refreshments.
