Councilman Ferrara Reminds Cold War Veterans to Apply for their Tax Exemption

"This is the least we can do to show our thanks," are the words of Councilman Angelo P. Ferrara as he spoke about the fifteen percent tax exemption for veterans of the Cold War. "I would like to remind all eligible citizens to submit their applications so they can receive their well deserved tax break."

Last year, Councilman Ferrara sponsored legislation to bring this exemption to Town of North Hempstead residents.

To qualify for this tax exemption one must have been honorably discharged after at least one year of active duty in any of the five branches of military between September 2, 1945 and December 26, 1991 and not already receiving a veteran’s exemption. Those who meet the outlined criteria are eligible for the fifteen percent tax break. If someone already applied last year, there is no need to re-apply.

Those who qualify may apply with Nassau County Board of Assessors at 240 Old Country Road in Mineola, New York 11501 with proof of property ownership and residency as well as the DD-214 (discharge papers). All applications must be submitted by December 31, 2009 and will affect the 2011 tax rolls.

Councilman Ferrara concluded, "If anyone has any questions or needs a copy of the application, they may contact my office at 869-7703 or the county assessor’s office at 571-1500."
