Mobile Dental Clinic Set to Make 2010 North Hempstead Tour

North Hempstead, NY—Supervisor Jon Kaiman, North Hempstead Town Board and North Shore LIJ announced that a mobile dental van is set to make its 2010 North Hempstead tour, with all-day stops at ten locations where basic dental care will be offered to residents 60 or older with no dental insurance.

“As we expand Project Independence—North Hempstead’s “aging in place” initiative—town-wide, we are continually adding new services to the menu of offerings available to our seniors for nominal costs or at no charge,” Supervisor Jon Kaiman said. “This is just one of them.”

Staffed by a dentist and support personnel employed by North Shore-LIJ, the 38-foot-long vehicle was made possible through an agreement with the Town & Mobile Health Long Island, a joint initiative of United Way of Long Island and the North Shore LIJ Health System. It was paid for in part through a grant from the Administration on Aging, an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services.

The program provides residents who have no dental insurance and who have not visited a dentist in a year or more with basic care including a full check up, cleaning, and X-rays.

"Dental care is a frequently neglected healthcare service for children and adults without insurance,” said Michael J. Dowling, North Shore-LIJ’s president and chief executive officer. “We’re pleased to fulfill a major community health need by expanding dental services for the uninsured in the Town of North Hempstead"

The dental van will operate between 9:30 am and 4 pm. as follows:

  • Friday April 23—Great Neck Senior Center, 80 Grace Avenue, Great Neck
  • Friday May 14—Port Washington Senior Center, 80 Manorhaven Blvd., Port Washington,
  • Friday May 21—Westbury Senior Center, 360 Post Avenue, Westbury

Appointments must be made in advance and intakes will be done by the Project Independence nursing staff.
