Great Neck, NY--It used to be that mental illness was considered incurable.  Today, experts say, even those with serious mental illness can be made well.

But, according to experts, a laundry list of prevailing myths often blocks the road to recovery.

Mindful of that fact, Supervisor Jon Kaiman and the North Hempstead Town Board, under the auspices of the Town’s “aging in place” initiative, Project Independence, announce a presentation aimed a debunking the myths of mental illness and spotlighting the realities.

The July 12 presentation at the Great Neck Senior Center—located at 80 Grace Ave.—will explore the “Myths and Realities of Mental Illness.” The hour-long presentation, one in an ongoing series of “Health Chats” geared to seniors, will kick off at 2 p.m.

Adding an element of entertainment to a subject matter often shrouded in social stigma, The Mental Health Players, an interactive theatre group, will bring some real life mental illness issues to life in a skit.

Clinical social worker, Madhvi Nayyar, MSW, will facilitate a discussion following the presentation by the Mental Health Players, a group of volunteers dedicated to spreading mental health awareness and education.
