Town of North Hempstead Conducts Free Electronic Waste Collection at a Number of Local School-Based Locations

North Hempstead, NY
To help advance environmental consciousness in the schools and the community, Supervisor Jon Kaiman is once again taking North Hempstead’s electronic waste disposal program on the road, making free-of-charge collections at a number local schools this month and next.

The proper disposal of electronic waste is crucial in protecting the environment because electronics such as DVD players, cell phones, TV’s and computers contain lead, mercury or arsenic, which seeps into the ground water when buried. Also, diverting hazardous materials from the municipal waste stream helps save taxpayer dollars by reducing the amount of trash that has to be collected.

By partnering with each school district and making it more convenient for residents to properly dispose of their old electronics, the Town is helping residents comply with the NYS Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act, which became effective Jan. 1. The new law requires residents to bring old electronics to a designated drop-off location or return the items to the manufacturer for safe disposal. E-waste will not be accepted curbside.

The Town urges all residents to take advantage of this convenient opportunity. E-waste recycling is available every Sunday at 999 West Shore Road, Roslyn, NY from 7:30 am – 3:00 pm and at the Town of North Hempstead Solid Waste Management Authority (SWMA) 802 West Shore Rd, Port Washington, Monday – Friday from 8 am to 4 pm, excluding Holidays.
