Town Announces Cooling Stations to Help Residents Beat the Heat
North Hempstead, NY– Summer has officially arrived, and the heat is on. That said, Supervisor Jon Kaiman and the North Hempstead Town Board would like to take this opportunity to urge residents, particularly seniors and children, to use extra precaution to protect themselves from the effects of the scorching temperatures.
The Town has set up four primary cooling centers to allow residents to escape the heat and keep themselves hydrated. They can be found at Manorhaven Pool Complex in Port Washington, Charles J. Fuschillo Park in Carle Place, Clinton G. Martin Park in New Hyde Park, and Senator Michael Tully Park, also located in New Hyde Park.
These four cooling centers will be open from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, Friday June 29, Saturday June 30 and Sunday July 1. Note that Charles Fuschillo Park will be open from 12:00pm to 8:00pm on Friday June 29.
In addition to steering residents to locations throughout the Town where they can stay cool, Supervisor Kaiman urges everyone to observe the following tips that will help you to stay comfortable all summer long.
To help beat the heat you should:
-
Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
-
Wear clothing that is light-colored, lightweight, loose and absorbent. Cotton is a good choice.
-
Eat fruit and vegetables to replace nutrients.
-
Wear a wide brimmed hat when going outdoors.
-
Take cool baths and shower once or twice a day.
-
Limit Caffeine and alcoholic drinks.
-
Check the daily heat index in the newspaper to alert you to risk of heat related illness.
In addition to the two cooling centers listed above, you can visit your local library, senior center or Project Independence office to flee the heat.
