Town Announces Second Annual Row for Autism Event

Port Washington, NY– Supervisor Jon Kaiman, Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio and the North Hempstead Town Board, in partnership with Friends of Port Rowing, are pleased to announce the Second Annual Row for Autism benefit event on Saturday, April 13th at North Hempstead Beach Park at 8:00 am.

The event began last year with the goal of combining two interests: the love of Rowing, and the need to raise awareness of the growing number of children with Autism. Seven area schools participated last year in the first regatta on our local waters, with more than 1,000 people attending. Over $20,000 was raised for the purchase of specialized Adaptive Rowing Equipment, which enables a disabled teenager to be paired with a typical peer mentor.

“The number of children that are diagnosed with autism is steadily rising every year,” said Supervisor Kaiman. “This makes it increasingly important that we continue to co-sponsor events like these that boost awareness of this disorder, and give autistic children a venue to excel in a sport they love.”

The free event will feature local North Hempstead high school crew clubs racing against each other as well as rowing races by those affected by Autism.

“I am so proud to be a part of this innovative event that was so incredibly popular a year ago,” said Councilwoman De Giorgio. “The participation of our local community was truly remarkable, and I look forward to continued success this year.”

In addition to competitive races, onlookers can enjoy all the amenities at North Hempstead Beach Park, as well as an on-land “learn to row” station among other event features.

Residents can donate online at www.PortRowing.com.
